The concert is sold out.
Saxophonist Michel Herrera certainly has groove! His music: an impulsive mix of Latin American rhythms and patterns, East Cuban Changüi, clave and rumba as well as traditional jazz playing. Michel Herrera’s interpretations and compositions express his sheer joy of surprising both his audience and himself over and over again. Young musicians like Michel Herrera benefit from Cuba’s new openness. Herrera once said that internationalising and bringing out one’s own sound while remaining a Cuban and introducing these new sound worlds to local audiences is an ambitioned notion. Together with pianist Jorge Luis Pacheco from Havana, he impressively succeeds in doing this; it is not without reason that they call their joint project “Madre Tierra” (homeland). Pacheco’s percussive playing needs not fear being compared to Chucho Valdés; he has found an admirer in Wynton Marsalis—just like Michel Herrera. The prized instrumentalists Herrera and Pacheco have known each other for a long time; they have performed together in Cuba—but it the duo’s premiere in Europe. They come to Germany for the first time, recommended by the most important Cuban jazz festival “Festival Internacional Jazz Plaza Havana”, which marks the start of a promising collaboration between Enjoy Jazz and Jazz Plaza Havana.
