Homeboy Sandman. Surely not a name exclusively known by hip hop nerds, but still not (yet) noticed by mainstream. 36-year-old Angel Del Villar II from East Elmhurst, Queens, New York has released six albums. Since 2011, the university-educated, vegan hipster lyricist with Puerto-Rican roots has been releasing his intelligent and thoughtful conscious rap on the renowned Stones Throw Records label. So, if you like, he is a label mate of MF Doom, J. Dilla and Madlib. Stones Throw Records producer Peanut Butter Wolf is a mentor for Homeboy Sandman, who, in May, released “Kindness for Weakness” containing album-length flows for Adidas wearing purists. The motto: “Mistaking kindness for weakness is a weakness I need to have more kindness for.” DJ Koze has indicated where Homeboy Sandman’s journey might go in the meantime, with the grandchild-grandfather dialogue on the “Holiday” edit of his “DJ Kicks” : “Oh, yes, deeer!”
