USA in 2016: The rift between black and white still seems as impossible to bridge as it was in the 60ies, and the gap between rich and poor seems bigger than ever. Issues of class are still dealt with in terms of skin colour. African-Americans have a significantly higher likelihood of ending up in prison or with a bullet in their bodies than the rest of the population. Over 50 years after the abolition of “racial segregation”, African-Americans still have a harder time finishing school and even those with an education are frequently jobless. A populist presidential candidate would like to erect a wall between Mexico and USA and no longer allow Muslims into the country—in the wake of this, even Ronald Reagan’s cowboy persona seems statesmanlike in retrospect. The standard of political discussions is so low that outrage has turned into resignation for some intellectuals. A few days before the US presidential elections, Enjoy Jazz is not resigning but will discuss the country’s situation in detail. Rapper Homeboy Sandman from Queens will give a first-hand account about the strangeness of racist and Trumpist life. Julian Gupta, Creative Director of the splash! Festival and booker at Melt Booking, as well as music manager and music journalist Stephan Szillus will be also participating. It promises to be a stimulating morning.
The talk will be in English.
