Bring your body to the party! »King« Shabaka Hutchings, saxophonist with Caribbean roots, is one of the busiest and most exiting players in the UK experimental scene. Last year, he whipped the audience into a frenzy with his madly grooving band Sons of Kemet. This year, Hutchings, who also plays with Five Blokes and Melt Yourself Down and sometimes with Polar Bear, is playing with the celebrated space groove trio The Comet Is Coming. Their debut album “Channel the Spirits”, released in spring, was a sensation. Hutchings is a declared sceptic of the jazz ghetto, and focusses on reaching listener’s bodies rather than their heads, on ecstasy and trance instead of elite art music. The Comet Is Coming is politically sensitive and pursues a space diaspora concept inspired by Sun Ra. With their band name, taken from Nostradamus, they focus on a potentially cleansing apocalypse. But until that time has come they play for dancing! Differently funky!
