In a documentary, British Dave Holland talks about how in the mid-60ies he played double bass in a dance combo in a North English holiday location, moved to London, ended up in Joe Henderson’s rhythm band and got a call from Miles Davis’s manager on the night of the first performance. Holland, so the offer, should immediately board an aeroplane and come to New York, Miles wanted to meet him. That was in 1968. The rest is history. Holland became an extremely important member of Davis band, up until 1972 where he wanted to walk new avant-garde paths with his own band (with Chick Corea, Barry Altschul and Anthony Braxton). Now, 40 years and numerous records and formations later, Holland is coming to Ludwigshafen with his latest quartet: called Aziza, lined-up with the American saxophonist and Holland’s old companion Chris Potter, West African guitarist Lionel Loueke and American drummer Eric Harland. One should listen to one of the quartet’s concert recordings to remember how extraordinarily awake and sensitively musicians respond to each other, how Dave Holland’s inspires his team, leading them to musical forms of expression that are simply only possible in that moment and in this unique combination: a dream!
