“Jazz has long moved away from being defined music, and has become something more fluid, a factor, a spirit that is expressed in a plethora of host music,” writes Peter Rüedi in “Stolen Moments”, his wonderful music critique collection. This can be experienced in a quartet passage by the singer Elina Duni who, together with her pianist Colin Vallon, shares a love for folklore from the Balkans, Turkey and the Caucasus. Vallon, born 1980 in Lausanne, studied jazz and says he certainly owes it something but currently does not find it very exciting. He has gone on a quest for new exotic spices to fuel his music. Folklore as an essence, but with no demands on authenticity. In his own trio, which performed brilliantly at Enjoy Jazz in 2011, Vallon displays an extreme sensitivity to sound which has sparked international furore. The three musicians have a feel for detail and know how to how to drive their interplay into abstract altitudes. It will be exciting to see with which material the celebrated team player Colin Vallon expresses this “spirit” as a soloist.
