Archie Shepp can be experienced live and in action three times as artist in residence in 2018. He has been a highly welcomed longstanding guest at the Festival in many ways: as an intellectual and political contemporary witness, Freigeist and free jazz protagonist from the early 1960s. In 2012, he played a grandiose concert at the side of Yusef Lateef, Reggie Workman, Mulgrew Miller and Hamid Drake. In 2018, the saxophonist, meanwhile 81 years old, is playing in duo with Jason Moran, is a guest of Anarchist Republik Of Bzzz, and talks to Christian Broecking. In 1965, he recorded his second “Impulse” album “Fire Music” in two days. This album title was to become a trademark for an entire scene. “Fire Music” has never been played completely on one evening! We can’t expect a repeat performance of this 1965 classic in 2018, but this evening will certainly transport the album’s legendary spirit.
