“Black Dynamite”, this affectionate, trashy homage to the early 70ies blaxploitation cinema unfortunately did not make it into German cinemas and had to make do with direct-to-DVD. A film critique fittingly wrote that it is more ‘70ies’ than the 70ies ever were. This was also because of its congenial soundtrack by multi-instrumentalist Adrian Younge who topped everything Issac Hayes, Bobby Womack, James Brown and Curtis Mayfield stand for. Younge, born 1978, who grew up with hip hop, loves the golden years of soul from between 1967 and 1973, and has himself said that he is obsessed by soundtracks. Younge subsequently worked as a producer with in the Delfonics, Kendrick Lamaar and Ghostface Killah. However, his biggest coup was in 2011 as band leader of Venice Dawn, and the funky psychedelic “Something About April”, which became a sample reservoir for Jay Z, Common and DJ Premier in the shortest time. So who cares if no film for the soundtrack exists? In January 2016 with “Something About April II”, Younge added stylistic elements supported by different vocalists like Stereolabs Laeticia Sadier and Bilal. Tomorrow’s people today!
