Zsófia Boros: g

“My approach to music,” guitarist Zsófia Boros said three years ago when her ECM debut was released, “is always influenced by intuition. When a piece of music moves or touches me, I want to reflect that—want to become a mirror.” Her impressively mature and multi-layered album “En otra parte” has songs by the Cuban composer Leo Brouwer, and also Ralph Towner, Vicente Amigo and Dilermando Reis. This gives a sense of the 36-year-old Hungarian’s breadth, who studied guitar in Bratislava, Budapest and Vienna, and has been awarded numerous prizes. She played at in Enjoy Jazz in 2013. Now she returns with a new album that will be released right in time for the Festival: “Works for Solo Guitar”, produced by Manfred Eicher, presents a stylistically varied programme with pieces by very different 20th century composers, including Jorge Cardoso, Garoto, Franghiz Ali-Zadeh and Egberto Gismonti. In her solo work, Zsófia Boros has a fascinating way of letting different traditions emerge in her playing, of spanning the bow between classical and jazz, between very different regions of the world, and at the same time she gets so innately close to the pieces with her soulful, fine interpretations. She once said, “Every composer has their own language, I try to learn them.”
