The Norwegian trumpeter and sound researcher is a regular guest at Enjoy Jazz, presenting what keeps his art in motion, and how it (he) is developing. He has performed as a soloist, in a duo with minimal techno and dub producer Moritz von Oswald, as a team player of Formation Food and with his own bands that cater for both thundering sound extremists like Stian Westerhus, and for Geir Sundstøl’s pedal steel guitar and banjo fed melancholy. Molvær seems to dread nothing more than stagnation and predictability. But evidently he still sees further musical potential with his current band with Geir Sundstøl, bassist Jo Berger Myhre who has also been a guest of the Festival with his dark jazz trio Splashgirl, and the bustling drummer Erland Dahlen. They have recorded another album titled “Buoyancy” which will be released in September this year. It melodiously captures the band’s creative spirit more spontaneously than in “Switch”. Morten Qvenild (In the Country, Susanna & the Magical Orchestra) completes the quintet.
Together with jazz author Adriana Carcu (All about Jazz) and drummer Erland Dahlen, Molvær will discuss his new album and Adriana Carcu’s most recent release in an exclusive half-hour discussion after the concert. This permits an intimate insight into the work of both the musician and the author as they reflect upon the previously heard concert.
