Gregor Ruppenthal

Gregor Ruppenthal’s love of music knows no boundaries: when Enjoy Jazz Festival director Rainer Kern calls Ruppenthal’s restaurant Marly in Mannheim late in the evening after a concert because the musicians are hungry, he reopens the kitchen. And should the Marly, which was awarded a Michelin star last year, have its day off, Ruppenthal may even invite the artists home, cook for them and play selected vinyls. Culinary art and music seem to have an extremely creative relationship for Gregor Ruppenthal. The chef de cuisine, born 1971 in Bad Dürkheim, started his cookery training at the Deidesheimer Hof. He then went on to study business economics, French and Italian in Mannheim, with a hiatus of one year where he trained with Alain Senderens at the restaurant Lucas Carton (3 Michelin stars) and at Ristorante Al Portone (1 Michelin star) with Roberto Galizzi in Lugano. Since 1999, he has been the owner of the Marly in Mannheim. In the matinee series Music Was My First Love, Ruppenthal will talk about his musical socialisation, and about inspiring interactions between music and cooking, and probably explain why he is the “world’s biggest Prince fan”.
