The celebrated pianist Michael Wollny and accordion virtuoso Vincent Peirani are on the same label, have known and respected each other for years, have played together in a quartet and as a duet. And had an impressive performance at the Echo Awards in 2015; they called their improvised piece “New Morning” – the name of the Paris bar where they met. Now, they have recorded a joint album titled “Tandem”, and can be exclusively experienced at Enjoy Jazz 2016. “Letting go of control and seeing what happens,” is how Michael Wollny once described their duet playing. Both Wollny and Peirani keep experimenting with this. Peirani, from Nice, has been performing with saxophonist Emile Parisien for many years; Michael Wollny has recorded several albums with Heinz Sauer, and could be experienced at Enjoy Jazz 2014 with Marius Neset, and last year with bassist Gary Peacock. All these dialogues are ecstatically unpredictable – not only due to the different concentrated vocal, temperamental and instrumental encounters. It is also because the moods and themes of these dialogues develop anew every evening. You have to keep surprising yourself, Vincent Peirani once said. And imagine what happens when two virtuous instrumentalists surprise each other!
