With a certain youthful naivety, Lucky Chops write on their website that they are on a mission to bring life back into the music industry. This is not exaggerated. For example, when the six musicians play “Stand By Me” in a New York subway, or “Hey, Soul Sister” on a small French town market square, street music is reborn from the spirit of anarchy. In the best sense, Lucky Chops are a brass band with boy group appeal, because they not only draw on pop canon but also to present their songs coolly and casually—including dance moves, stylish hairdos and a kind of New York prep-style à la Vampire Weekend. This has brought them to festivals and concert halls, and the word has spread about the enthusiasm with which the brass ensemble plus drums celebrate music: wherever they have been, they have left back enthusiastic fans. They met in a high school in midtown Manhattan, and jammed together in Central Park after lessons. Since then, they seem to be on a “joint mission” of “simply playing good music”, as one of them put it. Yes: damn good music, performance and surprisingly fresh sounding chart hits cover versions—those of you who would like to know how New Orleans jazz should sound in the 21st century should not miss this band.
