Gonjasufi, aka US American Zumach Eck, who lives somewhere in the desert new Las Vegas with his family is a fan of »broken music«, loves distortions, disturbances and tripping beats. After he drew initial attention with a guest performance on the Flying Lotus album “Los Angeles”, he became more popular with his albums “A Sufi And A Killer” and “MU.ZZ.LE.”. They made him critic’s darling but he was unsatisfied with his work. Gonjasufi wanted complete independence as a musician and producer and with his album “Callus” presents an album that bores itself into human pain with the zestfulness of performing a dental root extraction without anaesthesia. The things Gonjasufi does with rap, blues, noise and dub may remind older listeners of the sound experiments with which Mark Stewart tried to agitate his audience at the side of Tackhead in the 1980s. However, the driving force is harder now: ‘suffer to get to the light in lo-fi quality ”.
