Jan Garbarek’s first album was released in the late 60s. He has been loyal to ECM since 1970, and has given it its signature, be it as leader with Keith Jarrett or with the Hilliard Ensemble. His playing has changed over time: Don Cherry brought him to engage with Norwegian folklore. This opened up perspectives that could spread into the whole world. Probably no other soloist with Garbarek’s diversity of interests exists, and hardly anyone with such a characteristic tone. The 71 year old’s ideal is the human voice, and the saxophone enhances its highly flexible uniqueness. He has made innumerable recordings and has had countless collaborations. Nonetheless, the Jan Garbarek Group has existed for almost 40 years. This line up includes pianist Rainer Brüninghaus, Brazilian e-bassist Yuri Daniel and Indian percussionist Trilok Gurtu.
