Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones and Pat Metheny – they have all fallen in love with a young genius and use every opportunity to celebrate him. The whizz kid is called Jacob Collier, 21 years old, and lives in his mother’s house in London where he has designed himself a music room. From here, the most wondrous sounds go out into the world via YouTube: groovy choir sets with The Swingle Singers’ rhythmic drive, percussive fireworks, layered instruments, virtuous improvisations, and a repertoire of cover songs ranging from George Gershwin to Stevie Wonder to Brian Wilson. And they include videos with multiple images of Collier playing the different instruments himself. Something magical must have happened in that room. His debut has the fitting title “In My Room”, and also reveals a Beach Boys song reverence – wasn’t Brian Wilson also a young genius who built himself a world of sound in his room? Thanks to a “vocal harmonizer” Collier also wondrously replicates himself live. He can certainly do everything and in every style, making how he describes his style all the more interesting: “Perhaps the term jazz best suits my music, as it also involves richness of harmonies and complexity of rhythm.”
