This is a success story by all means: almost two years ago, together with drummer Daniel Gallimore, the halle02 put an obvious and yet impressive idea into practice: give an open stage to young musicians from the region for them to not only gain experience with audiences and try out playing with other instrumentalists and singers from a variety of genres but to also weave a network of talents. Gallimore arranged a band with renowned musicians who were to bring very different musical influences along with them. Ever since then, a jam session has been taking place every second Wednesday of the month. To start, the halle02 band plays a few pieces somewhere between funk, jazz and Latin, between Michael Brecker and Chuck Loeb, to create a groovy base for the evening. At the end, different constellations of young musicians join and prove their improvisation talents. Enjoy Jazz liked this approach so much that they took FunkLoch, as the project is called, into last year’s programme. And this will be continued in 2017 of course, with a nice surprise: multi-instrumentalist and electronic tinkerer Julian Maier-Hauff, who moved from Mannheim to Freiburg two years ago, will be joining the FunkLoch band’s first, hour-long set – to be followed by extensive jamming.
