Three is a holy, magical number – it has something fateful and something complete. In July, Caroll Vanwelden released her new, third, CD, which she dedicated to the beautiful, unearthly William Shakespeare sonnets which can be infinitely interpreted. “Shakespeare fascinates me,” says the Heidelberg-based Belgian singer, pianist and composer describing her continuous enthusiasm for this genius’ poetry. “Shakespeare’s Sonnets are an infinite world, and the music also opens up infinite possibilities. His themes are still relevant today.” The motifs and images in Shakespeare’s texts have always challenged artists. With her versatile, warm voice, Vanwelden not only doubly enters the emotional highs and lows of the texts with jazz and pop aesthetics, but also expands them. “I try to approach the poems very intuitively and make the Sonnets accessible to everybody,” she says. Her colleagues Mini Schulz on bass, Markus Faller on drums and Thomas Siffling on trumpet create a multi-layered entrance. Caroll Vanwelden has already presented the first two Sonnets at Enjoy Jazz. As all good things are three, we can now experience her with her most recent interpretations.
