He called his 2002 debut album “The Trumpet Player” to avoid further confusion with the world-renowned bassist Avishai Cohen, which as been a running gag in the scene ever since, especially because the trumpeter also plays in the trio The Three Cohens with his sisters Anat and Yuval. Jazz from Israel! Omer Avital, Yaron Herman, Omer Klein, Yonathan Avishai, Anat Fort, Gilad Hekselman, Zvi Keren, Asaf Sirkis – all internationally well-known names in the scene. Cohen likes to say that he left his home country to move to the USA at age 18 and has played with Charlie Parker, Clifford Brown, Miles Davis and Don Cherry. After a few highly recommendable releases with the Triveni Trio, the “rising star” musician finally made it to ECM in collaboration with the Mark Turner quartet and released two beautiful albums “Into The Silence” (2015) und “Cross My Palm With Silver” (2017). In his last album, Cohen politically references the crimes committed in the Syrian war, the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean, the West Bank occupation and racist police violence in the USA.
