Over 10 years ago, saxophonist and bass clarinettist, Daniel Glatzel, 22 years at the time, dared a bold and almost utopian experiment. The musician, born in Munich, got together 20 musicians from Jazz and Classical Music Departments at the Hanns Eichler School of Music in Berlin to create a band, or a continuously working ensemble. The focus here is on “continuous”! This is an organisational and logistic challenge bound to fail under anything less than perfect conditions. However, the experiment became a success, also because the participating musicians draw on an incredible range of expressions, say between Frank Zappa and Martin Denny, Sun Ra and Anton Webern, Gentle Giant and Salsoul Orchestra. And in 2015 they worked together with Hermeto Pascoal and toured Asia and South America. Following their Enjoy Jazz performance in 2009, the 2017 ensemble is once again stopping by at the Festival, also to present material from the new album “Vula” released in July.
