Remember Peter Weir’s films from the late 70s? “Picnic on Valentines Day” and “The Last Wave” were mystic thrillers with impressive images of archaic landscapes that spoke of ancient Aboriginal cultures. We don’t want to throw Aborigines and Maoris into one pot, but would like to highlight REWA’s idiosyncratic atmosphere. An acoustic encounter between two archaic cultures: Greek and Maori. In 2017 in Athens, Greek pianist Tania Giannouli and Rob Thorne from New Zealand, who is specialised in playing traditional and sacred Maori instruments, improvised together. The highly respected »Nga taonga puoro« instruments serve to communicate with the gods and imitate sounds of nature, wind, ocean and fauna. Sound master Steve Garden added »Treatments« to the duo’s work. REWA has been released on his “Rattle Records “ label. In Ludwigshafen, the Italian percussionist Michele Rabbia, who released the trio album “Lost River” on ECM, will accompany Giannouli and Thorne.
